Tryon's Palace

Tryon's Palace was completed 1770's in New Bern, the newly designated capital. The house has three floors and two small buildings that flanked the main structure, a kitchen and a stable. Servants worked in the basement storerooms. The offical business of the colony was conducted on the first floor. Tryon only lived in the Palace for a couple of years. After th War of Independence, Richard Caswell, the first governor of the state of North Carolina, lived and worked in the Palace.


Battle of Alamance

In 1771, an armed rebelon of backcountry farmers called Regulators battled with royal governor William Tryon's militia. The Regulators were upset with Tryon because he taxed the farmers unfairly.
